It was a surprise shower planned by Melanie's friends, but in keeping with family tradition, when a surprise is planned it
is engrained in our genetic markers to throw every possible obstacle into the path of success. With this in mind, it came
as no surprise to me when Melanie unwittingly decided not to attend the event, throwing everyone into temporary panic mode.
Needless to say, it all got straightened out and was going very smoothly until I told Celia that there was going to be
a surprise party for Mom in an attempt to hasten her out the door that morning. Never in a million years would I have
imagined that she would go into automatic distress mode with tears and all because she was now being forced
against her will to withhold information with the likeness of a state secret from her mother. (They're tight that way.)
I was able to convince her that the secret was going to be revealed as soon as we arrived at Laurie's house in ten
minutes and if she could contain her self-implosion before the ten minutes was up, she would get to enjoy the surprise.
Which she certainly did.
We enjoyed balloons and a delicious brunch.
The mothers enjoyed their children and the children enjoyed their mothers.
The kids had fun playing with all of Matthew's toys.
His big-boy bed was a major hit...
... especially with Kendall, who was intent on confining Matthew to his bed despite his pleas.
Celia was more focused on getting to the presents, so she was thrilled when it was time to dig in.
She started helping with the utmost of care
and quickly got into it wholeheartedly.
